Product Description: This Binnalit handwoven wrap around skirt of the Ifugao follows a black and white stripe pattern accentuated with black and red supplementary weft at the center and edges. Because of its attractive design and durable materials, it is perfect for curtains, mats, and upholstery. Hand weaving by the Ifugaos were traditionally done by women to augment family needs. Handloom weaving is a long and tedious process which consists of: preparation of raw materials, spinning, winding, dyeing, warping, and weaving proper. Most of the Ifugao fabrics are plain woven with a dominant dark spectrum which is achieved with the use of natural dyes. Natural dyes are derived from plants, tree barks, and others. For example, the blue shade - it is extacted from indigo plant while the black hue is obtained by burying then kneading yarn in rice terrace mud. On the other hand, the red and yellow tints are from boiled bark of trees and the white color is derived from boiling the yarn with milk. The northern tribes like Ifugao have well defined and individually identified motifs set on their looms. |
